Google TV: Good Idea Or Bad Idea?

If you’re tired of watching your favorite TV shows on your small screen computer or laptop, then boy does Google have a solution for you!

Introducing, Google TV.

But wait, Google! I have a solution for everybody!

It’s simple:

I call it, ‘Get a large screen monitor that plugs into your computer!’

And, I already have all my favorite shows added to one place:

…so I don’t need anything else!

Seriously though. Is all this really necessary?

For All You Idiots: Here’s A Lesson On High Five Etiquette!

In case you are a complete idiot like me who greets people with a punch in the face instead of a high five, here is a lesson on high five etiquette and how to properly greet someone.

****Click HERE or the JUMP to view the video****

WARNING: Listen carefully to what he says. I misunderstood and threw a microwave at my Aunt Edna this morning, who definitely did NOT understand that I was just trying to give her a level 5 greeting!! I mean, SHEESH, talk about dramatic! I only see her once a year and I wanted to make it special; that’s why I did what I thought was the highest level of greetings! Apparently, I was wrong.

Meh.. I bet she’ll come around once she’s out of intensive care.

What is PlayOn?

Tara here, back from PAX East, the second best gaming convention in the country (next to PAX Prime, that is!). I’m exhausted, excited, and full of game knowledge and new dice. But before we give you all the beautifully gory details, how about we tell you why we were there?

PlayOn had a booth at PAX and brought us along to be a part of it. We’re huge fans of the service and were so psyched when they invited us to come along to represent them. We had a great time demo-ing the service and watching our fave Hulu shows.

But what exactly is PlayOn?

playon

PlayOn is a software program that streams media to your gaming systems. It downloads to your PC and connects through your home network to your PS3, XBOX 360, or Wii. You can then use your game controller or connected remote to browse through tons of streaming channels like Hulu, Comedy Central, Adult Swim, ESPN, and CNN. If you have subscriptions to Netflix Streaming or MLB.TV, you can watch those on there as well.

Some of the most popular shows demoed at PAX were: Archer, House, Family Guy, and Lost. (Jill just started Lost and I’m about to start as well, so no spoilers, please!)

I really like PlayOn because it’s an easy way to see the shows I want when I want, and I don’t have to pay for cable. I believe 38% of PlayOn’s customers have canceled their cable and just stream everything.

Because it’s software, they just charge a one time fee for the lifetime license. Then you can use it to stream whenever you want–forever! The fee is $39.99. If you want to check it out before you buy, they offer a free 14 day trial. Check it out!

A couple of quick notes based on FAQs at PAX:

-This is meant for Windows based PCs, but if you have a Mac, you can use Parallels or Boot Camp

-You can play existing media from your computer. If you want to showcase pictures, play music, or watch a downloaded program from your pc on your tv, you can do that.

-The amount of channels available are always increasing, due to third party plug-ins being created. You can see these here.

Anyway, they were great sponsors at PAX and we recommend you check them out! Be on the look out for more footage/reviews from PAX in the next couple days!

This is a jumbo post featuring multiple comics, so most of the information will be beyond the cut.

Click on the picture (or the more button) for more information on the artists and their comics.

We Must Clearly Play On! (CLEAR™ & PlayOn)

(Bad joke, I know! At least I think I’m funny!)

Thanks to you readers and all the amazing feedback, Zaxy.com is fortunate enough to have it’s first two sponsors! Not only that, but they are some amazing companies to have bestowed upon our grateful hearts.

&

Our first sponsor, CLEAR™ is the amazing 4G WiMAX mobile internet service. I will be at SXSW hanging out at CLEAR’s video game & music booth. I’ll hopefully be PWNing some SXSW band asses at MW2 through the dates of March 16th – 20th! So stay posted for my twitter updates!

&

We also have the courtesy of going to Boston with PlayOn for PAX East! PlayOn is a digital media server that streams internet media from your PC to your Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 so that you can watch all of your favorite shows online, on your TV! Tara and I will be at their booth March 26th – 28th and we couldn’t be more excited!

Are you going to be at SXSW or PAX East? Let us know! Tell us!

Join My Outer Space!

I'm just happy to see you.

When William Shatner tells me to jump, I say “How high?” When he tells me to use www.Priceline.com when booking a hotel, I say “Next time I plan on traveling I will take a look during my price comparison research.” And when he tells me to join his new Social Networking site My Outer Space, I say “Already have, and looking forward to working on a project with you, Admiral.”

My Outer Space is a collaborative social networking site for creatives interested in sci-fi, horror, and fantasy. Members will be invited into “Starships” by “Captains” (or real-life producers) and invited to collaborate on projects. You can sign up on “planets” that correspond to your specialty, whether it’s writing, acting, gaming, composing, or technology. I enjoy acting and improv in my free time, so I signed up on planet Zara. (And it’s 3/4ths my name, so it was meant to be!)

I’m excited about the chance to collaborate and get to know other sci-fi folks in the area. If you haven’t already, go sign up! (And friend me, my username is ZaxyTara!)

Archived Popular Science Magazines Online

chainsawwristwatch

The curse of writing about technology is that eventually people will look back at what you wrote and laugh at what you thought was “cutting edge” and “futuristic”.

Lucky for us, the time to laugh is now. Popular Science has teamed with Google to put all of their archived magazines online. You can search by keyword on Popular Science’s website, or browse by month and year on Google Books.

The image above is from the month and year I was born (in the mid eighties). Apparently at this time you could get free Stetsons with chainsaws, and stylish-but-technologically-advanced wristwatches were big. Sweet.
