Doctor Who Through the Ages [9 comments]

February 9, 2011

Whether you’re a hardcore Doctor Who fan or someone who’s stuck at their computer asking “Doctor WHO??”, this infographic is for you.

It gives a comprehensive recap of every season of Doctor Who, so those of you who skipped ahead and started with Nine when the new Season began in 2005 (it’s okay, I’m guilty too), here’s the perfect chance to go back and get to know Doctors 1-8 in a time-efficient manner.

And if you’re into Doctor Who, is anyone attending Gallifrey One in Los Angeles next weekend? If so, I’ll see you there! Come say hi!

Which Doctor is your favorite? Let me know in the comments!

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Short Film Festival! [2 comments]

January 11, 2011

The time is near for one of my favorite yearly activities: The Science Fiction Fantasy Short Film Festival.

EMP/SFM and SIFF team up to showcase 4 hours worth of short films. Some low budget, some high budget, all amazing. The films all completely range in their storylines, feels, and mediums. At the end of the night, you get a Q&A session with the creators and one of them walks away with the award of “Audience Favorite”. I’ve gone almost every year it’s held, and can still remember some films that I saw in the first year. You’ll instantly forget some, but others will stick with you forever.

Take a look at this year’s trailer:

The festival will be held at the Cinerama in Seattle on January 29th. You can purchase tickets here. (I recommend sticking around for both sessions).

Will I see you there?

Torchwood gets a makeover. [7 comments]

January 8, 2011

For everyone sitting around twiddling their thumbs after the absolutely mind-blowing five episode miniseries of Torchwood that aired in 2009 (seriously, if you’re a sci-fi fan at all, go watch it. Torchwood: Children of Earth. You don’t even need to see the first two seasons of the show to understand it [though you should watch those too]), good news has been announced.

Season four of Torchwood is coming July of this year, and hype from critics has been nothing but positive.

The previously titled season, Torchwood: The New World has just been changed to Torchwood: Miracle Day, and the vague premise that creator Russel T. Davies has announced includes a world where the ability to die has disappeared. After the initial “eff yeah!” you feel upon hearing that news, just imagine, after you’re done dancing in the streets, how horrible that would be for life on Earth. Like, instant overnight population overload.

This season promises to have tons of action, fighting, drama and bad-assery, so I for one am stoked.

There has been a little bit of backlash about the show becoming too “Americanized”, but I think most people are just upset that many of their favorite characters died in previous seasons. Children of Earth was a vastly different show than the first two seasons, but it held its own, just like I believe Miracle Day will. It’ll also be airing on Starz rather than BBC America, which is a little odd, but as long as I get to look at John Barrowman, I don’t care what channel it’s on.

Star Trek Chatroulette [8 comments]

November 22, 2010

My friends and I got together to play Artemis, a new bridge simulator. We decided to take a break, and the idea was brought up to go on Chatroulette. It was a blast.

Now tell me: Would YOU “next” us?

(Take a look at our gameplay footage here.)

Gamma World! Tara’s POV [3 comments]

October 19, 2010

Last week Britt and I got to try something AWESOME: Gamma World.

As you know, I’m the D&Der of the group. And while D&D is great, I’ve never been super into Fantasy. So when I heard I could play a D20 RPG that was a bit more up my alley (Post-Apocalyptic Sci-Fi?) I was all “Hells Yeah!”

Take a look at some of my experiences and clips from the game here:

(Big thanks to Forest Gibson for making the video!)

When I play Tabletop RPGs, I play with my improv buddies. Which means we make it really tough on the GM. In the past I’ve played with small talking dragons, I’ve carried multiple canoes with me “just in case”, I’ve made myself shallow, diamond hungry characters whose sole goal was to find and wear a tiara… but with Gamma World, you can practically do anything. You start off rolling dice to get your character’s two origins, so it starts off pretty random, and you get to make the best of it from there. I mean, I was Zoltar (based on my origin cards of “Hypercognitive” and “Android), for Pete’s sake. But don’t think that’s where your character stops. Depending on the GM and your dice rolls, you may end up with extra abilities (or limbs) throughout the game.

If you like D&D, try Gamma World. If you don’t like D&D, try Gamma World. Seriously. It’s available for sale TODAY.

Wanna give it a go before you you shell out the bucks? Visit your local gaming store for Gamma World game day, this Saturday, October 23! You’ll get to play the same adventure we played (although we only went an hour into it… it’s a 4 hour campaign), and you’ll get some special cards ONLY available on Game Day. Can’t wait to see what they are? Feel free to decode this one!

I’m also looking at getting a game started and Livestreamed in November. More details to come, but it’ll include you getting to chat directly with the GM and influence the gameplay!

If you go to the Game Day or pick up Gamma World, let us know what kind of character you end up being! And check out Britt’s post for a POV from someone who’s never played D&D before.

Movie Monday: The Raven [6 comments]

April 26, 2010

I found this short film today, and am loving the special effects. “The Raven” takes place in LA in the future, and it looks like their cops (and criminals) have advanced a bit.

I’m a big fan of futuristic/dystopic societies in film, and what kind of statement they’re making about our current society.
Snarkerati created a wonderful list of the top 50 dystopian films–it’s a great place to start if you’re new to the genre.

What’s your favorite dystopian film or story?

Join My Outer Space! [2 comments]

March 12, 2010

I'm just happy to see you.

When William Shatner tells me to jump, I say “How high?” When he tells me to use www.Priceline.com when booking a hotel, I say “Next time I plan on traveling I will take a look during my price comparison research.” And when he tells me to join his new Social Networking site My Outer Space, I say “Already have, and looking forward to working on a project with you, Admiral.”

My Outer Space is a collaborative social networking site for creatives interested in sci-fi, horror, and fantasy. Members will be invited into “Starships” by “Captains” (or real-life producers) and invited to collaborate on projects. You can sign up on “planets” that correspond to your specialty, whether it’s writing, acting, gaming, composing, or technology. I enjoy acting and improv in my free time, so I signed up on planet Zara. (And it’s 3/4ths my name, so it was meant to be!)

I’m excited about the chance to collaborate and get to know other sci-fi folks in the area. If you haven’t already, go sign up! (And friend me, my username is ZaxyTara!)
