Wooo. Emerald City Comicon took place LAST last weekend (Fri-Sun, March 4-6) and I’m just now talking about it. Le sigh. But no worries, I’m going to see if I can temporarily erase PAX East from my mind and re-visit that weekend!
That Friday night Tara, Kristina and I were invited to participate in NERDprov. NERDprov is exactly what it seems; improv, but only dealing with nerdy topics. Kristina and I were invited to be judges, and Tara, being the improv goddess that she is, was invited to be an actual participant.
But you see, before NERDprov started, Kristina and I were hanging out in the theatre’s bar and the bartender was adamant on getting us drunk. SPOILER: HE SUCCEEDED.
The show itself was extremely fun to watch and VERY entertaining to judge. I believe I was the “how funny were you” judge. It was tricky for me because I uh laugh at EVERYTHING. But, I had been told to be a hardass and give lower scores than I wanted to. I was also told to act serious when we (the judges) were introduced, but I’m sure I was giggling and had a shit-eating-grin on my face. I blame the vodka. (THANKS BARTENDER!)
After the show, everyone met up at the bar (once again).
::NOTE: The pictures are kind of small, but if you click on them…BLAMMO! Full size, baby! *snort*::
The guy in the middle was the bartender! Or at least I think he was. Woops.
Drinking a "Zaxy".
Saturday we basically wandered around, ooohing and awwwing at things we couldn’t afford while taking pictures. Below is the only “scenic” photo I took. But every aisle was lined with awesome things to look at and buy (if you had money, unlike me!) ::shakes fists at PAX East plane tickets::
There were so many cool things to look at!
I've never read Bob the Angry Flower, but this guy just made me laugh.
Soon after arriving, we found Pedobear talking to children…no bueno…
I spy Pedobear...
So Tara and I decided that we needed a photo with him.
HE WAS SWEATY.
Tara and I ran into our friend Joe from Microsoft! He’s a very tubular person. Yes, I just used tubular in a sentence. I hope it still means “awesome”. Anywho, he’s the guy that gave us the tour of Microsoft Surface!
Can you tell how tired I was? Ah, hangovers.
And please, do yourself a favor and admire this zombified little girl. If I ever have a daughter, you know what I’m dressing her up as for halloween. Or for her friends’ birthday parties. Either way.
SOOO GOOD!
And because it IS a comic-con, there were butt-tons of Wonder Woman cosplayers. But we found the best one, hands down.
GOOORGEOUS.
These poor dudes kept bumping into me and apologizing 'cuz they didn't have any peripheral vision.
3v2...I think we coulda taken 'em!
I don't know who is cuter!
::fangirl scream::
That night we braced the freezing weather and went to the Hard Rock Cafe and watched that guy Spike from Buffy sing. I dunno anything about him, I never watched the show. There were a few other bands as well.
"Spike" was enjoyable to watch, no matter what!
The best part? This guy had H2 was on his crotch. FOR H2 AWESOME HURRR. Uh, I think that was the name of his band or something.
Seeing as ECCC was my first comic-con ever, I wasn’t sure what to expect, because honestly I know close to nothing about the comic industry. BUT. There was SO much cool stuff to gawk at! Seriously, I could have spent hundreds of dollars on stuff that just LOOKED cool. But, I only had a few dollars to my name ::shakes fists again at PAX plane tickets:: so I had to spend mah moniez wisely.
LOOK AT MY LEWT:
So, by now you should know that I’m a HUGE zombie nut, and one of my favorite authors, Max Brooks (author of World War Z), happened to be at ECCC. Of course I had to get his autograph.
IT'S ME!
Unfortunately I was SUPER awkward when I met Max. I was like. “ohai I love your work.” he said thanks, and that was it, followed by his scribbling on my poster. OH WELL.
Another booth that caught my eye was being run by Chris Furniss. He had all of these adorable video game drawings up for sale. I had no problem plunking down a few bucks for my own, personalized drawing:
Isn't it adorable?!
I recommend that you check out some of his other drawings.
Since I was on a Link-kick, I also asked the guys from Backroom Comics to draw a photo of Link and I getting married on unicorns. It turned out lovely.
IT'S A DREAM COME TRUE.
Bottom line: Emerald City Comicon was an absolute blast. Since it was so much fun, I’m *hoping* to make it out for SDCC this July. Which, of course, means more money spent, but it’s for a worthy cause, amirite?!
Things have been a bit dead on the blog while Britt headed off to PAX East and Kristina and I slowly recover from our ECCC souvenir-sickness we picked up. I tried going back to work today, since I feel a bit better, but my boss promptly told me to go home. In his words: “I’ve seen Outbreak, and I know what you are.”
Anyway, the perk of being sick is that I’ve gotten to catch up on my comic book reading. The first book I read was Trigger Men (Chapters 1 & 2).
Trigger Men is the first issue of the first series of Mike Andersen and Kyle Winter’s comic label, Triptych Books. And if this is a sign of what’s to come, then you better learn their names fast. Trigger Men tells the story of two hitmen, once being dragged back out of retirement to help his friend. The writing is smart, funny, touching, and even includes a couple twists. I’m not normally into stories about hitmen, but this pulled me in, and as soon as I finished, I wanted to read it again. The art, by Heather Brinesh, has a great feel to it. It’s not too overpowering, and adds a nice realism to the story.
I highly recommend you check out the comic and support a new, independent comic book label. You can find out more information at www.triptychbooks.com.
Tara here, reporting from sore throat-ville, adjacent to sniffles-town. I’m dealing with a bit of the con-crud, but was able to make a quick recap video while I was slightly healthier last night. I cannot wait to read all of the sweet comics I got and tell you all about them! Let this hold you over until that day comes:
Let me know what your fave part of Emerald City Comic Con was (if you were there)!
And I’ll leave you with this, my new favorite photo of all time:
We had such a blast at Emerald City Comic Con, and can’t wait to blog/vlog all about it in the next day or two. But while we finish recovering and gain our voices back, I thought I’d share this video with you all.
I met R2-D2. He stared at my chest and whistled at me. Then he ran away from my friend. He’s a jerk.
Thanks a lot, R2-D2. C-3PO was always my favorite, anyway.
Emerald City Comicon is coming up this weekend, and we can’t wait!
