MTC and Stan Lee have teamed up to host a contest seeking artists and writers for “The Seekers”. You would get to work under Stan Lee AND get $10,000 AND have your work in a comic book. Dude. If I had any experience with comic writing or art, I’d so be there. Check out Stan Lee talking about The Seekers, and then enter the contest here.

Donald Glover May Have Inspired New Spider-man [4 comments]

August 3, 2011

For those of you who don’t know, Peter Parker has died in the Ultimate Universe. When Marvel went looking for its next character to put on the spidey suit, they decided to go a more inclusive route. The new Spider-man is going to be half Hispanic, half African-American, and potentially inspired by Donald Glover and his campaign to play Spider-man.

“He looked fantastic!” Bendis, the author of the new comic, Ultimate Fallout and Ultimate Spider-man recalled. “I saw him in the costume and thought, ‘I would like to read that book.’ So I was glad I was writing that book.”

I’m thrilled to see a great opportunity for a non-white superhero. And for the potential sweet movie/tv shows starring Glover that could come out of this! (A girl can hope, right?)

What are your thoughts on a non-white Spiderman?

The Amazing Spider-Man Trailer [7 comments]

July 21, 2011

I’m pretty excited for this. Who doesn’t love a good origin story? (Except for you, Wolverine.)

The feel is dark, Peter Parker’s hot, and we might even get some first-person spidey footage? Not bad.

What are your thoughts?

Free Comic Book Day This Sat! [Add a comment]

May 3, 2011

We had Epic Game Day last weekend, but the nerdy fun is far from over… this Saturday, May 7th is Free Comic Book Day! Free Comic Book Day is like Comic Book Christmas. Most comic shops have special events and sales occurring in addition to free copies of special comics created just for the day.

Some of the free comics this year that I’m looking forward to:
Locke & Key Free Comic Book Day Edition
Atomic Robo and Friends
Spontaneous
The Tick
Amazing Spiderman

(You can see all of the comics available here.)

Find out if your favorite comic store is participating here.

…While you’re there, why not try out a new series or graphic novel? Your purchase will help keep your local store thriving. To give you some ideas, I’ll be doing some comic reviews throughout the week. Keep an eye out! You can see some of my past reviews for the following comics:
2 Sisters
Spell CheckersNight ZeroDemo

Will you be at Free Comic Book Day this Saturday? Which comic are you most excited to pick up?

Review: 2 Sisters [1 comment]

April 13, 2011

You may remember that Top Shelf loaded me up with some comics to review at Emerald City Comicon. I just finished the first one, and oh my goodness. It’s amazing.

2 Sisters is unlike many other graphic novels I’ve read. It’s serious, quiet, and smart. I pride myself in being able to guess plot lines and endings of stories, but this one threw some twists at me I was not expecting. The style of artwork and minimalistic writing is different than other graphic novels I’ve read, and took a couple pages to get used to, but once I did, I was fully immersed. The story focuses on Elle, a woman who, through a turn of events, becomes a spy during World War 2. We also see information on her sister and her past intertwined with stories of empowered women throughout the ages.

If you’re looking for something a bit different than your average graphic novel, I definitely encourage you pick this up. You can get it from Amazon, Top Shelf, or your local comic store.

WTF: Dyna-Woman [1 comment]

March 31, 2011

Well, here’s your WTF of the day:

Parts were surprisingly touching. And the video makes me think “If Rainn WIlson can rock a Wonder Woman costume… so can I.” Just saying.

You’re welcome? Oh, and apologies for the screen cap it’s on. That’s…. yeah.

Ugh. Wonder Woman’s Not Looking Good. [8 comments]

March 18, 2011

Over the past week, the new Wonder Woman logo and costume for NBC’s reboot have been released. And… they’re not so good. Wonder Woman is a strong, beautiful, powerful woman, and these make her look more like she’s a floozy tramp or member of a pop band. I’m not cool with this.

Come on guys. The old logo wasn't broke. Don't try to fix it.

This looks like a cheap, ill-fitting Halloween costume.

This costume just makes me sad. It looks cheap, uninspired, unflattering (except for the boobs, holy COW), and nothing that I’d aspire to be. Let alone the fact that stunts have to be tough to do in what appears to be a onesie. That’s some camel toe waiting to happen.

If Wonder Woman is going to be redone, it should be done well, with equal parts respect and sass. This is not what I’d expect at all.

What are your thoughts? Do you love it? Hate it? How do you think the series will turn out? Will it make it past the pilot?

Britt’s *VERY LATE* ECCC recap! [2 comments]

March 15, 2011

Wooo. Emerald City Comicon took place LAST last weekend (Fri-Sun, March 4-6) and I’m just now talking about it. Le sigh. But no worries, I’m going to see if I can temporarily erase PAX East from my mind and re-visit that weekend!

That Friday night Tara, Kristina and I were invited to participate in NERDprov. NERDprov is exactly what it seems; improv, but only dealing with nerdy topics. Kristina and I were invited to be judges, and Tara, being the improv goddess that she is, was invited to be an actual participant.

But you see, before NERDprov started, Kristina and I were hanging out in the theatre’s bar and the bartender was adamant on getting us drunk. SPOILER: HE SUCCEEDED.

The show itself was extremely fun to watch and VERY entertaining to judge. I believe I was the “how funny were you” judge. It was tricky for me because I uh laugh at EVERYTHING. But, I had been told to be a hardass and give lower scores than I wanted to. I was also told to act serious when we (the judges) were introduced, but I’m sure I was giggling and had a shit-eating-grin on my face. I blame the vodka. (THANKS BARTENDER!)

After the show, everyone met up at the bar (once again).

::NOTE: The pictures are kind of small, but if you click on them…BLAMMO! Full size, baby! *snort*::

The guy in the middle was the bartender! Or at least I think he was. Woops.

Drinking a "Zaxy".

Saturday we basically wandered around, ooohing and awwwing at things we couldn’t afford while taking pictures. Below is the only “scenic” photo I took. But every aisle was lined with awesome things to look at and buy (if you had money, unlike me!) ::shakes fists at PAX East plane tickets::

There were so many cool things to look at!

I've never read Bob the Angry Flower, but this guy just made me laugh.

Soon after arriving, we found Pedobear talking to children…no bueno…

I spy Pedobear...

So Tara and I decided that we needed a photo with him.

HE WAS SWEATY.

Tara and I ran into our friend Joe from Microsoft! He’s a very tubular person. Yes, I just used tubular in a sentence. I hope it still means “awesome”. Anywho, he’s the guy that gave us the tour of Microsoft Surface!

Can you tell how tired I was? Ah, hangovers.

And please, do yourself a favor and admire this zombified little girl. If I ever have a daughter, you know what I’m dressing her up as for halloween. Or for her friends’ birthday parties. Either way.

SOOO GOOD!

And because it IS a comic-con, there were butt-tons of Wonder Woman cosplayers. But we found the best one, hands down.

GOOORGEOUS.

These poor dudes kept bumping into me and apologizing 'cuz they didn't have any peripheral vision.

3v2...I think we coulda taken 'em!

I don't know who is cuter!

::fangirl scream::

That night we braced the freezing weather and went to the Hard Rock Cafe and watched that guy Spike from Buffy sing. I dunno anything about him, I never watched the show. There were a few other bands as well.

"Spike" was enjoyable to watch, no matter what!

The best part? This guy had H2 was on his crotch. FOR H2 AWESOME HURRR. Uh, I think that was the name of his band or something.

Seeing as ECCC was my first comic-con ever, I wasn’t sure what to expect, because honestly I know close to nothing about the comic industry. BUT. There was SO much cool stuff to gawk at! Seriously, I could have spent hundreds of dollars on stuff that just LOOKED cool. But, I only had a few dollars to my name ::shakes fists again at PAX plane tickets:: so I had to spend mah moniez wisely.

LOOK AT MY LEWT:

So, by now you should know that I’m a HUGE zombie nut, and one of my favorite authors, Max Brooks (author of World War Z), happened to be at ECCC. Of course I had to get his autograph.

IT'S ME!

Unfortunately I was SUPER awkward when I met Max. I was like. “ohai I love your work.” he said thanks, and that was it, followed by his scribbling on my poster. OH WELL.

Another booth that caught my eye was being run by Chris Furniss. He had all of these adorable video game drawings up for sale. I had no problem plunking down a few bucks for my own, personalized drawing:

Isn't it adorable?!

I recommend that you check out some of his other drawings.

Since I was on a Link-kick, I also asked the guys from Backroom Comics to draw a photo of Link and I getting married on unicorns. It turned out lovely.

IT'S A DREAM COME TRUE.

Bottom line: Emerald City Comicon was an absolute blast. Since it was so much fun, I’m *hoping* to make it out for SDCC this July. Which, of course, means more money spent, but it’s for a worthy cause, amirite?!
