Sony Doesn’t Like the 3DS [9 comments]

Nintendo announced it’s beautiful new 3DS (that I cannot wait to try at PAX!), and Sony doesn’t like it. Surprise, surprise. The 3DS promises to have a 3D screen that doesn’t require any special glasses.
Sony is claiming that they researched this “naked eye” 3D technology in the past, and didn’t find it to be flawless. Kazuo Hirai, the head of SCA said “Based on internally conducted research, naked-eye 3D for portables does not have high precision, and at present there are limitations”.
Instead of being a friendly competitor and appreciating Nintendo’s advancement as an opportunity to grow the portable gaming industry, Sony’s going to be a whiny baby about it.
Sounds like someone’s jealous…
What are your thoughts? Do you think Sony has a point? Do you think the 3DS will work as they say it will?
(For those who want a slightly less biased article on this, you can find one here. Thanks to @FreakingWesley for the find!)

I think Nintendo knocked it out of the ballpark with the 3DS.
I think Sony is just protected their own IP and trying to spin the PR on this entire situation. My personal opinion is that they thought there was a larger profit margin in the Full 3D with glasses.
I believe it probably is a better 3D experience with the glasses, but that doesn’t detract from the fact that they will make considerable more money if you buy the Sony PS3,BluRay,HDTV, and branded Glasses.
I think Nintendo had their eye on user experience and I can’t wait to get my hands on one.
Sony hated on XBL and then tried to recreate XBL with Sony Plus. They hated the Wii and then recreated the Wii with the Move.
I hope Sony won’t hate on us or else we might see clones of ourselves…. wearing black.
I’m not really surprised. Especially with how much Nintendo dominates the handheld market. I’m sure Sony is saying whatever they can to try and pull sales away.
I also love how Nintendo can come up with little changes for their handheld and it sell like Hotcakes. I’ve always found that interesting. I’m not saying the 3DS doesn’t interest me, I just don’t see why it’s the most awesome thing ever.
After getting my hands on the 3DS, I can assure you it does work. the viewing angle is really the only issue with it.
Not sure what Sony is going for with this public statement.

This doesn’t surprise me. Sony thought that they were going to come out of E3 looking like the Top Dogs, especially since they had the Kevin Butler appearance. Obviously, they weren’t ready for Nintendo to steal the show with their games lineup (New Zelda, Metroid, DKC, Kirby, etc.). Also, with Sony trying to gear up popularity for the PSP, having the press rave over the 3DS doesn’t bode well for them, especially with a lot of people saying the 3DS was the best thing at the show. Sony’s is just plain bitter that they seemed to come out on the “losing” side of E3… although I’d probably give the “loser” tag to Microsoft for this year.
The 3DS is silly. Isn’t the point of a portable to be able to sprawl out on your couch playing sideways with one hand in the popcorn bowl? So now they’re saying we need to sit at specific angles with our arms at specific lengths away from our face to be able to see the screen just right. I see a flaw.
The technology is interesting, I just think it’d be best developed on a console, not a handheld.
I went hands on at E3, and like Javi said, it works, and it’s awesome. Some games look FANTASTIC *cough* Snake Eater *cough*. I had a few minor issues with the viewing angle, and some images just didn’t match up (you could clearly see two distinct images). But yeah. Hatas gon hate.
Sony shouldn’t be saying ANYTHING about 3D. Yeah, great they’re coming out with 3D games…but theres a catch to that. You have to buy one of those $5000 3D tvs AND the dumbass glasses. OH you’ll need more glasses if you want to have friends over to play. OH and there’s no solid research as far as long term effects it could have on your vision.
To top that off, if you become a PSN+ member, yeah you get bonus content, but the moment you stop paying…goodbye content. Lame.
He is talking about the 3DTV movement sony is spearheading (much like the Blu-Ray movement) and the fact that they have tried to get a screen in bigger sizes without glasses and the tech just isnt feasible…well at least right now. the 3DS is a great achievement like he said there will be limitations. He is more covering the uneducated person on the fact you still need glasses to see 3D content on a big screen.
Also there is no solid research that 3D without glasses will damage your vision either so maybe you shouldnt jump to conclusions about what effects your vision and what doesnt
Also i dont know what score you shop at but Best Buy is selling 3DTVs for 2000K…which is the standard price right now for the high end TV (and people bitched when plasmas were 10000K…)
