Movie Monday: Arthur’s Lore [3 comments]

Arthur

I’m a big fan of fairy tales, legends, and mythology. Not frilly princessy pink stuff, but the dark stories passed down from generation. The stories that give people morals and show what social roles different people had at the time.

Even more so, I’m a fan of people who take these old fairy tales and legends and translate them into modern day stories. And Arthur’s Lore does an excellent job of this.

This short film is a modern day re-imagining of the legends of King Arthur. It’s funny, well done, and creative with the names of the characters and locations. It’s only about 15 minutes long and you can watch it here. (Click on Arthur’s Lore on the bottom right). The film does have some NSFWish elements, including violence, a girl in her underwear, and some sexual humor. You know, all the good stuff. You’ve been warned.

Do you have a favorite re-telling of a classic fairy tale, legend, or myth? Tell me about it in the comments!

What about Disney’s Sleepin Beauty? Yeah, it contains pink princessy stuff, but it also has one of the most bad-ass villains of all time? I mean, she laid a death sentence … ON A FRIKKEN’ BABY!!!

And let’s not forget her turning into an acid spitting dragon!

  3. Let me clarify on the princessy pink stuff: I don’t like it when Disney transforms really neat (and pretty dark) stories into fluffy films solely focused on the pretty dresses and romance. I did grow up on Disney, and I have a soft spot for the film “Enchanted” (it’s a great telling of a “fractured fairy tale”!), but I usually prefer the originals. However, I love different versions of fairy tales, and Princess Bride is in fact wonderful.

If you liked the Disney Sleeping Beauty, you should check out one of my favorite retellings of it, Briar Rose by Jane Yolen. She combines the story with the Holocaust, and it makes you look at both in a new light. Very cool.
