Comic Day Countdown: Demo Comics [3 comments]
Posted in Comics.
Free Comic Book Day is coming up this Saturday, and I am celebrating by sharing some of my favorite comics this week!
What’s that? You haven’t been to Free Comic Book Day before? It’s only the most amazing day ever! Like Christmas, but you just get comic books. (Or maybe that is your Christmas, lucky duck!) Check out the website to find the nearest participating comic shop to you. You get some free select comic books, and it’s a great day to support your local shop… Perhaps you’ll be inspired to pick up some of the comics I’ll be mentioning this week! A lot of stores also do special events like photo ops or free signings.
The comic I’d like to showcase today is Demo.
I became a fan of author Brian Wood through Local, and ending up buying the paperback volume on Amazon on a whim. Not knowing what to expect, I started reading.
Demo is a collection of one-off stories about teenagers coming to terms with what makes them unique. Oftentimes, these characters have superpowers. But that doesn’t make this your average superhero story. These are darker, introspective, and focused on the character instead of the action. My kind of story.
Although Demo originally came out in 2003, it is now back with six more stories in the form of Demo Volume 2. These comics are being sold individually (as comics are oft to do), but will probably come out with a paperback collection at the end of the run. The first couple issues are available in your comic store now. I’ve read the first, and look forward to picking up the second on Saturday!
If you like flawed, introspective characters and neat thought-provoking endings, this is the comic for you.
Stay tuned… on Friday I’ll let you know when and where I’ll be on Free Comic Book Day. Hope to see you there!

Free Comic Book Day is amazing! Great choice too. Demo was one of those comics that just blew me away. Love it when that happens.
Man, I’m glad I read this before I marched up to my local store, armed to the teeth, ready to “liberate” some comics from their captors…
