Behold, The Square!

Want to buy stuff using your phone? Want your receipts sent to your email instead of losing them in your pockets? Introducing, the ‘Square!’

‘Square’ is an up and coming little device that will soon allow you to swipe your credit card and make purchases with no service charge, no fees and no hassle. It also sends your receipts to your email or phone instantly, eliminating the worry of lost or damaged papers and keeps track of your purchases.

Sounds pretty nifty! All you need to do is plug the device into your phone’s headphone jack and viola! Also, Square will donate a penny of every purchase you make to a cause of your choice, so that you and Square are working together to better the world. How sweet!

    Aside from electronic receipts, what’s the difference between swiping it to your phone and swiping it to the cash register? Does this mean that cash registers have to be revamped to ‘beam’ the price, and description of the purchase to phones? How does an audio jack provide the digital coding necessary to do all that o.O

    It looks like a really cool idea, and if it catches on I bet websites like ebay and amazon will accept encrypted credit card swipes, so it would be more secure…as far as the encoding goes, the iPod Shuffle (or at least old versions) gets the music loaded onto it through the headphone jack. But yeah, how the heck are you supposed to pay at actual shops with that? It seems like it will costs stores to set up to accept that kind of payment…
